And the Final Champions are Crowned

The men’s 7.5 championships concluded this week with a high powered battle between two great teams.
Eventually, after 75 mins, the first-time pairing of Brent Harris and Ian Laird prevailed over Scott Atkins and Chris Ostrander by a score of 10-5.

Congratulations to all of the winners in this tournament! I very much appreciate the participation and support toward the YMCA Tennis Program.

And Then There Were Two

We've worked our way thru 21 tournament matches and now there is one final test.....

and rightly so, its for all the marbles!

Scott Atkins  and Chris Ostrander will take on the team of Brent Harris and Ian Laird for the Men's 8.0 title.
Through the first three round robin matches , Team Harris/Laird hold a 3-game lead over their upcoming opponents. What does this mean?  It means Atkins/Ostrander need a winning margin of 4 games or more.  If they can do that, they go home winners!  Winning by only a 3-game margin will give them a tie for this year's championship, but we all know these four gladiators won't be satisfied having by having to share the glory.  A 10-point Match Tie-Break would then be played in case such a situation arises.  And isn't that what we all really want to see !?

This match will take place on Wednesday, February 17th at 6pm sharp.  Spectators can watch from the Main Hall or the TRX Room on the 2nd floor. Window space is limited!

TitleTown

Sunday was a fun day of tournament tennis at the Y Tennis Center! Two more titles were captured on this day.

In the first match of the day, the men’s 7.0 Final pitted BJ and JJ Preston against the top-seeded team of Ray Elbin and Dave Burget.  The Preston brothers prevailed on this day 11-10, winning the sudden death tie-break 10-8.

The second championship match squared two great teams against one another: Corrine Hoffman / Keyuko Kuyama vs Amy Davis / Melinda Murphy.  From the very first point it was obvious this would be a glorious battle.  After falling behind 1-4, Murphy/Davis fought back to lead 9-5.

And then.....

..... the battle escalated to unprecedented heights as Hoffman/Kuyama prevailed in an epic comeback to win 11-9.

Thanks to all our awesome YMCA members and tennis fans for coming out in the cold to watch today’s matches! We counted over 20 spectators who watched the matches!! Here’s more photos from today’s tennis....

A special thanks also goes out to my 3-man ballboy crew of William Cook, Owen Vick, Luke Williams. They always do a great job ! Thanks boys !!

Toughest Ticket In Town

Photo from 2/4/21

Because of your love for the sport, you are part of an ever-growing group of tennis and pickleball fanatics that have made it very tough to get an indoor court during these cold winter months.

Whether you and your family are taking advantage of our 30 hours of weekly programs, going to battle in the indoor tournament, playing in a USTA League, playing a game of pickleball, using our hitting wall and ball machine, or simply playing a friendly game with your fellow YMCA members - your passion has created a situation where court demand exceeds available supply most mornings and evenings!  This explosive growth gets me thinking...…..

Do we need more indoor courts?

Would YMCA members and our community support the addition of outdoor courts here at the East Branch Tennis Center?

Because of your continued support of our tennis and pickleball program, these questions are once again relevant, and that's very exciting!
